In Paris the Doctor unearths a plot to steal the Mona Lisa

Count Scarlioni is financing experiments into time, or more precisely time travel, but purely for self preservation. He is in fact an alien who arrived on Earth with the last of his race before life began. It was only the destruction of his craft in the Earth’s atmosphere that triggered life. If he can return in time and stop the events from unfolding he will save his race, but all life on Earth will never have existed.
