Inferno - The Beginning of the End

Project Inferno, brainchild of Professor Stahlman, promises to deliver a new and inexhaustible supply of energy

The plan is to drill through the Earth’s crust. But as drilling continues a green fluid leaks from the pipes and on contact with human skin transforms its victims in brutal primeval creatures.

The Doctor is in attendance at the project in the hope of using some of the power to regain control of his TARDIS. An accident throws him into a parallel world where Britain is ruled by an aggressive dictatorship.

Story background: 1970. Written by Don Houghton, produced by Barry Letts. Notable for: The first and only (in the classic series) use of a parallel Earth. The last appearance of the original TARDIS console. The face seen on the ‘Unity is Strength’ posters is Jack Kine - co-founder of the BBC Visual Effects Group in 1954. Don Houghton also wrote the screenplay for Hammers ‘The Satanic Rites of Dracula’.
